By opening the subconscious, the painting process begins. Often recent experiences come to the surface. When I start I have no preconceived ideas about image or composition, as intuition leads. After spontaneous mark making, the act of painting becomes a balance between the conscious and the subconscious. A conversation begins. It is a two way dialogue, an exchange of questions and answers between myself and the work. The conversation is fluid at times and may also cease, only to begin again organically. During the process, I am a channel for my emotional, visual and physical experiences to come through. By adding, taking away, scratching and scrapping, a natural conclusion is reached. The image feels and expresses a truth.
